Make It Happen Book Review

About the Book
Title: Make It Happen: A Guide to Happiness for LDS Singles
Author: Kylee Shields
Release Date: October 2012
Publisher: Walnut Springs Press
Genre: LDS Self Help
Book Description:
Do you know what it means to be a kigatsuku person? Are you currently in a “hurricane” relationship or a “bridge” relationship? Do you know what it takes to be “righteous in the dark”? Have you struggled to find your place in the world as an LDS single? Do you feel like a misfit or a menace—like a circle trying to fit into a square?
If so, you’re not alone. It used to be an anomaly to be twenty-one and single in the LDS culture, but now there are entire stakes filled with single adults. In this book, author Kylee Shields explains how you can make the most of your single life, even if your current situation isn’t what you expected.
Make It Happen is a collection of principles, blog entries, stories, and conversations had on couches, floors, kitchen tables, and at many single-adult gatherings. It is filled with practical ways to make changes in your life, find hope, increase faith, strengthen relationships, and build the kingdom
Author Bio:
“My name is Kylee and I am passionate about life. I am the oldest of 8 children and have the most amazing parents ever. I have one adorable niece and one adorable & squishy nephew. I grew up in Oregon, moved my senior year of high school to Utah, then moved to San Diego, Boston, and currently live in Arizona.
I went to BYU and got my BA in English (creative writing/Editing) and a minor in Linguistics. I love words and writing! There is something very powerful in putting words together and expressing human emotions. I love poetry, reading great novels, blogging, etc. I have an old typewriter I adore and like to type out letters now and again and seal them with wax. I am an author and avid reader. I love learning new words and can trace that back to my mom who has the most amazing vocabulary.
I also attended ASU and got my Masters in Social Work (emphasis in child & family therapy). I have always been drawn to the "punk kids" and absolutely love my job. I work as a Shadow (family therapist) at The Anasazi Foundation. I get to do therapy with amazing adolescents out in the deserts of Arizona. My office is on the trail and I get to throw rocks, hear hearts, and get to know some incredible kids from all over. Not bad for a day job!
When I am not with my family, hanging out with my friends, or working I absolutely love to travel. I have been to Egypt, Ghana, Italy, Mexico, Canada, Ireland, Scotland, and almost all 50 of the states. I love music--singing, writing songs, playing the piano, and listening to other musicians. I co founded a Musical Fireside group that is in the process of becoming a non-profit. I have loved watching INSPIRE: music. service.hope grow and touch the hearts of those who hear us sing.
I am a huge Avengers fan (Captain America), I like straws, bridges, swinging on swings, and trains.
I love God and try to recognize His presence in my life. For Him I am indebted for my many blessings and tender mercies. All that I have and am is because of Him.”

My Review:

I love that my family is so large, yet we are all so close to each other.  It is amazing to see the great things that they do.  One of these moments, is when you read your cousins book and you realize that she is an author.  My cousins Kylee Shields is an author, who wrote a book.  I read the book and I loved it!  She gives great examples, experiences and stories of her life and what she has done to make the most of it.

Each chapter starts with an awesome quote or scripture.  It gives the reader a good beginning for what that chapter is about.  Although I am not single (but remember, I didn't get married until I was 26, and in the Mormon world, some may say that is old!) I learned a lot from this book and came to the conclusion that there are always areas where I can improve and become a better person, friend, husband and father.

Kylee is not afraid to put herself out there and share all of her experiences, good or bad.  She tells about what she learns and what she can do to become a better person.  Her positive attitude radiates through her words on each page and you can tell that she is a happy, motivated and positive person who is always looking for the best.

Do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of the book and give it a read.  As you read you will have a motivating and exciting experience where you will want set some goals and get to work at becoming a better person in your everyday life, whether you are single, married, widowed or divorced.  Read it, you won't regret it!

Station 13 Donuts

You already know that we are donut people.  We love donuts, So of course, just a couple weeks before we are moving we find a great new donut spot!  My cousin introduced us to it, and we took off that first night to try it out. We were all hanging out anyway and we wanted some dessert, so we went and it is everything we like and more.  They have specialty drinks, like frozen hot chocolate that are delicious too!  The decor is all firehouse stuff and you can put on clothes, boots, etc.... it's pretty fun.  They are just east off the Lehi Main Street exit.

Do yourself a favor and head over there, since we will be leaving soon and will have to find a new donut spot.  Enjoy!  Click HERE to see their website too, and they are open late, which is a bonus!

World of Chalk - Cheeky Chalkboards

Check this out.
This is my cousin and his awesome wifey.  Go HERE to help them out and below is what it is all about:

What?
Chalkboards. Simple, affordable chalkboards. No silly or frilly shapes or frames.

Small, medium, big, or super-sized chalkboards that are great for kitchens, events, living rooms, or just about anywhere you need to put a creative outlet.

We have cheap packages for sale so you can easily and afforably get your hands on all the chalkboards you need to fulfill your wildest chalky dreams.

Why?
It turns out chalkboards are ridiculously expensive. Go ahead and do a quick search and you'll find that one plain chalkboard that's about the size of those in our video (20" x 30") will cost you right around $40. If you want six, that's $240. Yeah that's ridiculous.

My wife and I think we can do it for much cheaper, but we need some cash-monies first to see if it's feasible.

Also, it's the best wall art to have because you can change it as often as you want.

We will start making and shipping chalkboards as soon as we reach our funding goal of $500.

How?
You can show your support for our cause in a number of ways:
1. If you like our idea but not enough to fork over hard cash:
◦We still love you.

◦Show your support by sharing our campaign with your friends.

■Blog

■Facebook

■Instagram

■Shouting on mountain tops.

2. If you like our idea enough to fork over hard cash:

◦Do that.

◦And show your support by sharing our campaign with your friends.

Jett's Flight Plan

So a buddy of mine, that I grew up with in Salt Lake City has a son, Jett that has a very rare genetic disorder called pontocerebellar hypoplasia.  Jett's parents are loving their time with Jett but they are not sure how long he will be with them.  He will most likely not be able to talk, walk or even sit up on his own.   His parents started a blog call Jett's Flight Plan and you can read it HERE.  It is a pretty incredible story and so many people are reaching out and wanting to help.

In fact, it was on the front page of ksl.com today.  You can read the awesome article HERE  Cody's sister is selling t-shirts for Jett's Flight for only $12 and all of the money is going towards medical bills.  They are also posting pics on their blog of all the places that Jett's t-shirts are traveling too.  They have gone to places all over the USA and I am sure there will be even more to come in the future.

I just ordered t-shrits for my family, if you would like to have one too then email Amy at:

Cahootal

My cousins are awesome!  They have a new business called CAHOOTAL.  It is their new baby where they sell produce, meats, cheese, chocolates, spreads and beverages all throughout Utah so you can get it locally.  As they say on their website:

"Buying local is not a new concept - Neanderthals invented it. We're simply trying to keep it going. We like local food because it usually tastes better and because it helps our neighbors' farms and businesses. When we can't find something that's made locally (like real extra virgin olive oil), we buy from our local importers or from the nearest source. Cahootal is mostly for Utah/by Utah, but other people can buy, too :)"

So please support them and LIKE them on Facebook, sign up for the newsletter on their website and get the word out, thanks and go get your cahootal on, because you know I have!

The Daily Dish Utah

AHHH!!  So, early this afternoon I received an email and then a phone call from a local reporter from the ABC 4 News here is Salt Lake City.  They invited me and a guest to appear on their morning show, The Daily Dish tomorrow!!

The Daily Dish is a a talk/variety show geared to everyone that lives in Utah! They talk about local fashion, fun, food, fitness, events, hot topics and more.

They want me to come on and discuss my ugly sweater parties that I have been throwing for the past 7 years.  How cool is that?  I invited my sister Monica to go with me, since she has been a major help in planning these parties for the last few years!  So tune in tomorrow, Wednesday, December 14th from 9-10 am to see us on the air.  It's on the CW channel locally here in Utah.  I am pretty sure it will be online too after the filming, so I will post that once it is up.

HERE is the link to their website and HERE is the link to their Facebook page.  Go on over and 'Like' them, thanks!  And the pics are up on my Facebook.  Go on over and see them, they are pretty awesome!   I will put some on here later this week.  Adios!

The Ugly Sweater Party is almost here!

This is your friendly reminder to come.  It's on this upcoming Sunday, December 11th at 6:30 pm in SLC at the Shields Residence.  It is going to be the classiest party of the season with lots of good drinks, food and desserts!

My sister and I have been finishing the final things/ideas for the party and I think we are all set to go.  I found most of the mugs from storage and have plenty of sweater options to decide from.  Now just to finish off on the wassail recipe and finish some other odds and ends.  I have been asked by a few people about how many sweaters/mugs I have and if they can have/buy some.  Maybe next year I will have to sell some of the sweaters that I have.  Maybe I will do it.  Ha.  Stay tuned......

Oh, also my sister is giving away awards for the following categories:

1.  Most Festive Sweater
2.  Most Snooty Sweater
3.  Ugliest Sweater and
4.  Above and Beyond

So you better dress to impress!! See you there friends and family!!  And Happy Holidays!!

Ugly Christmas Sweater Party

I don't want to jump the gun or anything, but I am way too excited for this and have to get you guys excited for this year's Ugly Christmas Sweater Party, otherwise known as 'The Neck N Nog - Sweater & Wassail Party.'

This is the 7th year of doing the party, and I still love it.  I have been hitting up all of the DI and Savers stores and getting more mugs and looking for the perfect sweater or turtleneck to wear.  You have to go early or else the good ones go quick, trust me.  And you always get a few weird looks when you are browsing sweaters in the women's section, ha!

We will have yummy desserts, home made wassail, hot cocoa and egg nog.  And the photo booth will also be there to capture all of these great moments.

This year the party will be back in Salt Lake City, and here in the invite that my sister made.  She is also helping me host the party this year.

So save the date, December 11, 2011 at 6:30 pm in SLC and get your festive clothes and Christmas Spirit ready!  It's gonna be a great party, like they always are.
